Pattern and Color in a Single Pour
Stamped concrete starts as an ordinary pour. While it is still workable, we press rubber texture mats into the top so it reads as slate, flagstone, cobblestone, brick or wood plank. Color goes in the mix and on the surface, then a sealer locks it in. You get a decorative patio, walk or border without hundreds of separate pavers to settle and shift.
How stamping works
The base, forms, reinforcement and air-entrained concrete are the same as for any patio. The difference is timing. After the slab is placed and floated, a powdered release agent goes on, and then crews lay the stamping mats and press them into the surface while the concrete is firm enough to hold the pattern but soft enough to take it. Edges and corners get hand tools. A day later the release powder is rinsed away and joints are sawn; sealer waits until the cure is done. It is one of the most time-sensitive jobs in concrete, so we schedule stamped pours for mild days when we can control how fast the slab sets.
Stamped concrete in a freeze-thaw climate
Stamped concrete can do well in Kenosha, but it needs more care than a broom-finished slab. The textured surface holds water in its low spots, and the sealer is the main thing keeping salt and water out. If the sealer wears off, the surface can flake and the color fades. That is why we:
- use an air-entrained mix on every stamped pour
- pick patterns with enough texture for grip on icy days
- seal once the slab has cured, and tell you when to reseal
- recommend no salt on stamped concrete at all, especially the first winter
Where stamped concrete fits
- Backyard patios: the most common use, often with a contrasting border.
- Front walks and entries: a stamped walk adds curb appeal to an older house.
- Driveway borders and aprons: stamped bands frame a plain driveway without the cost of stamping the whole slab.
- Pool surrounds and fire pit areas: texture adds grip on wet feet.
- Steps: stamped treads and risers to match a patio.
Choosing a pattern and color
Ashlar slate and random stone patterns hide small cracks well. Cobblestone and brick suit older houses with red brick or traditional trim. Lighter colors stay cooler in summer and show less fading. A darker release color on a lighter base gives a more natural, two-tone look. Samples come with us to the estimate so you can hold them up against your siding or brick.
Upkeep
Fixr notes that stamped concrete is resealed periodically and that heavy pressure washing can fade the color. Wash it gently, and recoat with sealer every few years, or as soon as water soaks in instead of beading. Use a plastic shovel in winter and skip the salt. Done this way, Fixr puts the life of stamped concrete at about 25 years, similar to plain concrete.
Stamped Concrete Options
Every stamped job is a mix of pattern, color and sealer. These are the choices you make.
Patterns
Ashlar slate, random stone, flagstone, cobblestone, running bond brick, herringbone and wood plank.
Integral color
Color blended through the full depth, so a chip shows the same tone, not gray.
Release color
An accent shade left in the grooves that makes the texture read as real stone.
Borders and bands
A contrasting edge around a plain or stamped slab, or bands across a driveway.
Sealer
A clear sealer that slows water and salt and brings out the color.
Stamped steps
Treads and risers that match a stamped patio or walk.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Is stamped concrete a good idea in Wisconsin?
Yes, if it is poured with air-entrained concrete, sealed, and kept free of de-icing salt. The sealer is what protects the surface, so plan on resealing every few years.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
Sealer can make smooth patterns slick when wet. For walks and steps we steer toward deeper textures, and grit can be mixed into the sealer.
How much does stamped concrete cost compared with pavers?
Fixr lists basic stamped concrete at $8 to $12 per square foot, which is less than most paver installs. Mid-range and high-end stamped designs with several colors can cost as much as pavers or more.
Can you stamp my existing concrete?
Stamping happens while concrete is fresh, so an existing slab cannot be stamped. A thin stamped overlay is possible on a sound slab, though with our winters a fresh pour is usually the safer bet.
