One Village, Many Lakes

Salem Lakes covers a lot of ground, and concrete contractors here work around more water than almost anywhere else in Kenosha County. The village formed on February 14, 2017, when the town of Salem and the village of Silver Lake merged. It had 14,601 residents and 6,319 housing units in the 2020 census, across about 33 square miles, with about 2.8 square miles of that being water.

Communities around the water

The village takes in a long list of named places: Benet Lake, Camp Lake, Cross Lake, Lake Shangrila, Silver Lake, Voltz Lake, Trevor, Wilmot, Liberty Corners, Salem Oaks and more. The Fox River runs through the village too. Each area has its own mix of homes, from older lake houses to newer subdivisions.

About 10.6 percent of housing units were counted as vacant in 2020, which in lake country often reflects seasonal homes. Seasonal homes come with their own concrete needs: walks and steps that sit unused all winter, and slabs that need to survive freeze-thaw without anyone shoveling or salting them.

Concrete near lakes and the Fox River

Wet ground is the main concern. Near lakes and the river, the water table can sit close to the surface, especially in spring. We handle that by:

  • Building up the base with compacted stone so the slab stays above soggy soil
  • Sloping every slab so water runs away from the house and does not pond
  • Using air-entrained concrete that resists freeze-thaw damage
  • Cutting control joints at the right spacing so cracks form in straight lines

We also ask how you use the property. A driveway used year-round gets planned differently from a pad at a summer place.

Projects we take on in Salem Lakes

Projects that suit Salem Lakes properties include patios facing the lake, stamped concrete around fire pits, steps down a sloped yard, new driveways, and garage and shed slabs for boat and equipment storage. We also handle repair and replacement of old slabs that have heaved or sunk.

For a slab that will hold a boat trailer or heavy equipment, we use thicker concrete, more reinforcement and a solid base so it does not crack under the load.

Rebar, mesh and fiber

Owners often ask what goes inside the slab. Reinforcement does not stop concrete from cracking; joints do that job. What reinforcement does is hold cracks tight so the pieces do not separate or shift.

  • Rebar is steel bar set in a grid on supports. It is the strongest option and the one we lean toward for driveways that carry heavy loads, garage slabs and slabs on uncertain ground.
  • Wire mesh is a lighter steel grid. It works when it is lifted into the middle of the slab during the pour. Mesh left lying on the ground does little.
  • Fiber is mixed into the concrete. It helps control small shrinkage cracks near the surface but is not a replacement for steel in a structural slab.

For a boat storage pad near Camp Lake or a driveway on soft ground near the Fox River, we usually recommend rebar on chairs plus a thicker slab. For a small walk, mesh or fiber may be enough. The estimate states exactly what goes into your slab.

How we price

Every estimate is written and itemized after a site visit. It lists tear-out, base, thickness, reinforcement, finish and sealing, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Rules and timing

Lakefront lots can come with extra rules, and requirements vary by address. We check whether the Village of Salem Lakes or Kenosha County requires a permit for your project before we plan the pour. If the job needs to wait for approval, we tell you up front so you can plan around it.
