Suburban Concrete in Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant has grown steadily, and concrete contractors here see a lot of suburban homes from several building eras. The village counted 27,732 residents in 2020, up from 19,340 in 1980. Its housing units grew from 11,827 in 2010 to 12,667 in 2020, on about 33.7 square miles of land next to the city of Racine.
From town to village
Mount Pleasant was settled in 1835 and organized as a town in 1842. Residents voted to become a village, and it incorporated on September 16, 2003. The village has also drawn large industrial projects: Foxconn announced a campus here in 2017, and in September 2025 Microsoft announced an AI datacenter in the village.
For homeowners, what matters is what is under their own driveway. The village has added housing in every decade since 1980, so its concrete ranges widely in age and condition.
What homeowners here usually need
Driveway replacement. Driveways from earlier decades crack and settle, especially at the garage and the street. We tear out, rebuild the base and pour new air-entrained concrete with proper joints.
Stamped and plain patios. Bigger suburban yards suit larger patios. Stamped concrete with an integral color gives a stone or slate look; a broom finish keeps cost and upkeep lower.
Sidewalks and steps. Walks from the drive to the front door and stoops at side entrances.
Garage and shed slabs. Detached garages and sheds need their own slabs, with thickened edges.
Repairs. Hairline cracks can be sealed. Slabs that have dropped or broken need replacing.
Why slabs settle in established subdivisions
Most sinking is not about the concrete. It is about what is under it. Backfill near foundations settles over years. Downspouts empty onto driveways and soften the soil. Thin slabs poured without a stone base crack under car weight. When we visit, we look for the cause first. Then we explain what we would do, and why it should not happen again.
How thick should it be?
Thickness is one of the biggest differences between a slab that lasts and one that cracks. As a general guide for residential work:
- Walks and patios: around 4 inches is common for foot traffic.
- Car driveways: 4 to 5 inches on a good base is typical.
- Driveways for trucks, RVs or trailers: 5 to 6 inches or more, with heavier reinforcement.
- Garage slabs: at least 4 inches, with thickened edges under the walls.
The base matters as much as the concrete. A thick slab on soft soil still settles. We usually place several inches of compacted stone under driveways and garage floors, more where the soil is poor.
We write the thickness, base depth and reinforcement into the estimate so you can compare it with other bids. A lower price sometimes means a thinner slab or a skipped base, and that difference shows up years later.
Common Mount Pleasant questions
Three come up again and again: whether to replace a whole driveway or just the worst panels, whether a new patio can match the old one, and whether stamped concrete is worth the extra upkeep. The answers depend on the slab and how you use it. We walk the site with you, point out what we see, and give you options in writing rather than a single take-it-or-leave-it number.
How a Mount Pleasant job runs
- A site visit and measurements
- A written estimate with thickness, base, reinforcement and finish spelled out
- A permit check with the Village of Mount Pleasant where the work requires one
- Tear-out, base prep, forming, pour, finish and cure
- Sealing for stamped or decorative work
We will also tell you how long to wait before walking, then driving, on the new slab.

Mount Pleasant Questions
Why is my Mount Pleasant driveway sinking at the garage?
Usually the backfill near the foundation has settled, or water from downspouts has softened the soil. We fix the base and the drainage, not just the slab.
Do you pour stamped patios in Mount Pleasant?
Yes. We pour, color, stamp and seal patios and help you choose a pattern and color.
How long before I can drive on a new driveway?
We will give you a timeline for your mix and the weather, but plan on waiting several days for cars and longer for heavy vehicles.
