Winthrop Harbor Concrete, Right on the State Line

Winthrop Harbor is the first village south of the Wisconsin line on Lake Michigan, and concrete contractors from Kenosha are only minutes away. The village was incorporated in 1901 and had 6,705 residents in the 2020 census, in 2,749 housing units. It covers about 4.6 square miles of land. Developers intended it as an industrial district, but it stayed mostly residential until North Point Marina was built in 1989.

A residential village by the water

In 1899 the Winthrop Harbor and Dock Company bought over 2,000 acres just south of the state line. The industry never came, and homes filled in instead. In 2020 the village counted 2,638 households, 2,014 of them families, and a housing vacancy rate of 4.0 percent.

That gives us a lot of steady, practical work:

  • Replacing driveways that have cracked at the garage or street
  • Pouring new front steps and walks
  • Building backyard patios, often stamped concrete
  • Replacing old garage and shed slabs

Lake weather at the border

The village is a marine warning point for the National Weather Service on Lake Michigan, a reminder of how much lake weather affects it. For concrete, lake air means wind during pours and long freeze-thaw seasons. We respond with:

  • Air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw resistance
  • A compacted stone base that drains instead of holding water
  • Proper slope away from your foundation
  • Curing and protection while the slab gains strength
  • Sealing for decorative surfaces

Repair or full replacement

We look at the whole slab before recommending anything. A few narrow cracks on a level driveway can be sealed. Sunken sections, broken corners and heaved panels are usually better replaced. On older homes, we often find slabs poured without a base, which is why they keep settling. When we replace those, we fix the base too.

Salt, deicers and your concrete

On the lakefront, winter means ice, and ice means deicers. Not all of them treat concrete the same way.

  • Rock salt (sodium chloride) is common and cheap. It does not chemically attack sound concrete, but it raises the number of freeze-thaw cycles at the surface, which can cause scaling, especially on young or poorly finished slabs.
  • Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride melt ice at lower temperatures. Used heavily, they can still contribute to surface damage.
  • Ammonium-based deicers are the ones to avoid entirely. They attack concrete directly.
  • Sand gives traction without chemical risk and is the safer choice for a slab in its first winter.

We recommend sealing exterior concrete, keeping deicer use light, and shoveling before ice bonds to the surface. A good air-entrained mix and a well-cured surface go a long way.

Sidewalks and steps

Front walks and stoops in Winthrop Harbor take the same lake weather as driveways. We pour steps with a solid footing, even rises and a landing at the door. Walks get proper joints and a slope that sheds water. If the walk meets a new driveway, we pour them to match in height so there is no trip edge.

Patios for lake breezes

A backyard patio near the lake gets wind, sun and plenty of moisture. A broom finish stays grippy, and stamped concrete gives a finished look when it is sealed and resealed on schedule. We place the patio so it drains away from the house and size it for the furniture you plan to use, with room to move around.

Planning your project

Winthrop Harbor sits at about 656 feet. Lots are mostly flat, so drainage needs planning. We check whether the Village of Winthrop Harbor requires a permit for your work before we schedule the pour, and we give you a written estimate first.
