Concrete in a Classic Small Town

Union Grove is a classic small town, and concrete contractors here work on sidewalks, steps and driveways in a tight, walkable village. It had 4,806 residents in 2020 on about 2.5 square miles. Governor Henry Dodge named the area, combining "Union" with "Grove" for the burr oak grove on its west side. The village dates its establishment to 1838.

A village that kept growing

Union Grove had 1,358 people in 1950 and 3,517 by 1980. It added more than 13 percent between 2000 and 2010, and housing units climbed from 1,677 to 1,960 in that decade. So the village has two kinds of homes: an older core that grew slowly for a century, and newer homes added since the 1980s.

The Racine & Southwestern branch of the Milwaukee Road ran through town. CP Rail now runs the line from Sturtevant through Union Grove to Kansasville.

Older core: walks and steps

In older homes, front walks and steps get the most attention. Houses close to the street often have a short walk, a stoop and steps that have settled or cracked over decades. Large old trees, fitting for a town named after an oak grove, can lift walks with their roots. When we replace a walk near a big tree, we:

  • Remove the broken sections
  • Check for roots and talk with you about what can be cut safely
  • Rebuild the base and pour new sections with proper joints

For steps, we pour a solid footing so the new steps do not sink away from the house.

Newer homes: driveways and patios

Newer homes tend to have attached garages, wider drives and room for a patio. Typical projects there are concrete driveways, stamped concrete patios, and garage and shed slabs. Even newer driveways can settle at the garage when backfill compacts. We fix the base, not just the surface.

Replacing a public walk in front of your house

In a walkable village like Union Grove, the sidewalk in front of a home gets a lot of use. Sections heave from roots, sink at joints, or crack into pieces. A trip edge on a public walk is a safety issue for neighbors and visitors.

When we replace walk sections, we:

  • Saw-cut cleanly at joints so the new section meets the old without ragged edges
  • Match the width, slope and finish of the surrounding walk
  • Rebuild the base, which is often missing under old walks
  • Use air-entrained concrete so the new section stands up to winters as well as the old ones did, or better
  • Keep the walk passable or mark it clearly while it cures

Rules for the public walk can be different from rules for your own driveway. We confirm what the village requires for sidewalk work before we schedule, and we tell you if it needs an inspection.

A note on old trees

Union Grove's name comes from an oak grove. Where a mature tree shades the yard and we pour near it, we try to keep digging away from the main roots, and we may suggest a slightly different layout or a flexible joint. Cutting big roots can harm the tree and still not stop future lifting. We talk through the trade-offs with you before tear-out.

Higher ground and drainage

Union Grove sits at about 774 feet. Slopes are gentle, but we still set every slab with a measured fall away from the house, because even a flat-looking yard needs somewhere for meltwater to go in March. We check with the Village of Union Grove on permit needs, especially for any work at the public sidewalk.
