Lindenhurst: Concrete From Every Decade

Lindenhurst was built almost entirely in the last 70 years, and concrete contractors here see slabs from every decade since. Developer Mort Engle subdivided the 600-acre Lehmann farm in 1952, and the first homes went up in 1953. The village incorporated on January 16, 1957. It had 1,259 residents in 1960, 8,038 in 1990 and 14,406 in 2020, with 5,187 housing units.

Built in waves

By 1961, about 200 houses a year were going up under Engle's control. After building roughly 2,000 homes, he sold his remaining land to U.S. Home Corporation and Federal Life Insurance Company, and growth continued through the 1990s, when the village went from about 8,000 to more than 12,500 people.

That history means a Lindenhurst street might have:

  • 1950s and 1960s homes with original or once-replaced driveways, often narrow and thin
  • 1970s to 1990s homes with two-car drives now showing cracks and settled aprons
  • Later additions such as Victory Lakes

Moraine country

Lindenhurst lies within the Valparaiso moraine, and the area is rich in lakes and wetlands. Ground near water and marsh can stay wet, and some soils hold moisture. Wet soil under a slab freezes and heaves in winter. We dig to firm soil, place and compact a stone base that drains, and slope the slab away from the house. That is the most important part of a driveway that lasts here.

Driveway replacement, step by step

1. Measure, check slope and find the cause of any settling 2. Break out and haul away the old concrete 3. Remove soft soil and build a compacted stone base 4. Set forms and reinforcement 5. Pour air-entrained concrete and finish it 6. Cut control joints and cure the slab

We also pour patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs.

Leveling versus replacing a sunken slab

A sunken driveway section or stoop can sometimes be lifted rather than replaced. Slab leveling pumps material under the slab to raise it back into place. It works well when the slab is in one piece, has only minor cracks, and sank because of a void or soft spot rather than a failed base across the whole area.

Replacement makes more sense when:

  • The slab is broken into several pieces
  • The surface is scaled or crumbling
  • The whole base is soft or missing
  • The slab is very old and thin

In Lindenhurst, with homes from every decade since the 1950s, we see both cases. A 1990s driveway with one dropped panel may be a good leveling candidate. A thin 1960s slab with cracks everywhere usually is not. We will look at it with you and recommend the option that will actually last.

Steps and walks on older homes

Lindenhurst's early homes often have short front walks and a stoop or two steps at the door. Those slabs are now decades old and can tilt toward the house or crack across the middle. Replacing a walk and stoop together lets us set matching heights, a gentle slope away from the door, and a landing that fits the door swing. It is a small job that changes how the front of the house looks and feels.

Garage aprons

The apron at the front of the garage is often the first part of a Lindenhurst driveway to fail. Backfill near the foundation settles and the apron drops, leaving a lip at the door. We replace the apron with a rebuilt base and tie it into the driveway with proper joints.

Lindenhurst sits at about 764 feet. We check whether the Village of Lindenhurst requires a permit for your driveway or apron work before we schedule the job.

Lindenhurst Questions

My Lindenhurst home is from the 1960s. Is the driveway original?

It may be, or it may have been replaced once. Either way, older drives were often thin with little base. We rebuild the base when we replace it.

Why does wet ground matter for my driveway?

Wet soil under a slab freezes and heaves. A draining stone base and proper slope keep water from collecting under the concrete.

Do you pour stamped patios in Lindenhurst?

Yes. We pour, stamp, color and seal patios.
